Children thrive when their families are engaged in their development and when their caregivers are themselves able to thrive. The Star City Reads coalition is aware of many barriers to families’ success across many parts of life. We are always looking for more ways to understand the obstacles Roanoke City families face—and more ways to support them. Many Star City Reads partners work to support families. Here are some examples of their work:
Blue Ridge Literacy provides English classes and tutoring to adults. Parents who are strong readers will help their children become strong readers. https://www.blueridgeliteracy.org/
Books and Breakfast: Turn the Page and the Roanoke City Public Schools offer free Books and Breakfast at Hurt Park Elementary and Westside Elementary every other Saturday during the school year. Books and Breakfast is open to the families of all students at these schools. Contact Turn the Page to learn more. http://www.turnthepageva.org/
Parenting Books: The Main Library has a brand-new collection of parenting books. These books cover a wide range of parenting topics, from baby’s sleep problems to anxiety relief and discipline, and more will be added every month. Come check out our parenting resources today!
