Star City Readers

Our signature program is Star City Readers, volunteers who read aloud to pre-k, kindergarten and first grade classes at high-need Roanoke City Public Schools and other programs. Each month, a Star City Reader reads three books aloud to a class. The children then each receive a new, age-appropriate book to keep and read with their families. By the end of the school year, each student has nine books of their own!

During the 2015-2016 school year school, over 5,400 new books were given to students at 9 schools and afterschool programs by a dozen volunteers and a few Roanoke Public Libraries staff. This year, we have expanded to a total of 11 schools and programs, serving approximately 900 children each month with over 30 volunteers!
